Electronic Publishing & Open Access
Digital media enable researchers to distribute documents and articles on the internet in variety of ways. Articles published in print journals can be made available in online scientific repositories such as the institutional repository of Freie Universität Berlin. Researchers can also choose to have their work published in purely electronic journals, where texts can be enriched with video and audio material, raw data, and interactive references.
Open access to scholarly articles (and to research data in a broader sense) means free availability of this literature on the public internet, permitting any interested users to read and use the full texts of these articles for any lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. Open Access e-journals utilize the advantages of digital media but make article full texts available to all internet users, while ensuring their quality by peer review.
Freie Universität Berlin Supports the Open Access Initiative
In January 20006, the President of Freie Universität Berlin signed the "Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities". With its Open Access Policy, which was passed in summer 2008, Freie Universität Berlin encourages all its researchers to make their work publicly available either in scientific repositories such as the the university document server or in Open Access e-journals
